From cult classics to modern hits, these are the movies our team turns to when we want to settle in for a chill, cannabis-friendly night on the couch.
Some nights you want a high-stakes thriller. Other nights you want to put on something familiar, sink into the couch, and let a good movie do its thing. For those nights, we've got opinions.
Here's the Hive Cannabis team's running list of go-to films for a mellow, cannabis-friendly evening at home (for adults 19 and over, of course).
The Cult Classics
These are the films that essentially built the genre.
- The Big Lebowski (1998) — The Dude abides. Endlessly quotable, easy to follow, and somehow funnier every time. - Half Baked (1998) — Pure absurdity. Best enjoyed with low expectations and a big bowl of snacks. - Dazed and Confused (1993) — Less a plot than a vibe. Perfect for a long, slow watch. - Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) — A snapshot of an era, with one of the most iconic stoner characters of all time.
Animation Bliss
There's just something about animation when you're a little elevated.
- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) — Visually stunning. The colours, the fight choreography, the music — every frame is a feast. - Spirited Away (2001) — Studio Ghibli at its most magical. Cozy, weird, and emotionally satisfying. - The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021) — Hilarious, heartfelt, and gorgeous to look at. - Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) — Wes Anderson's stop-motion charm, ideal for a calm autumn evening.
Modern Comedies
For when you want to actually laugh.
- Pineapple Express (2008) — Maybe the modern stoner comedy. Action, chaos, and a surprisingly sweet friendship. - Superbad (2007) — A coming-of-age classic that holds up. - What We Do in the Shadows (2014) — Vampire mockumentary, criminally underseen, hilariously dry. - Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) — Taika Waititi at his best. Funny, warm, and visually beautiful.
Slow-Burn Beauties
For nights you want to feel something.
- The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) — Symmetry, pastels, and a story that unfolds like a wrapped present. - Lost in Translation (2003) — Mellow, lonely, lovely. - Paddington 2 (2017) — Yes, really. One of the most universally loved films of the last decade for a reason.
Documentary Picks
If you'd rather your brain go somewhere new than follow a plot.
- Planet Earth / Blue Planet (series) — Narrated by David Attenborough. Watch in 4K if you can. - Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011) — Meditative and gorgeous. - The Last Dance (2020) — Long, immersive, and great if you want to settle in for several hours.
Setting the Vibe
A few easy upgrades for movie night:
- Snacks ready before you start. Future you will thank past you. - Phones across the room. Defeats the purpose if you're scrolling. - A low-dose edible 30 to 45 minutes before showtime, so the timing lines up. Or smoke at the start of the film. - Water nearby. Cottonmouth is real.
A reminder: cannabis is for adults 19 and over in BC, and never drive after consuming. Pop by your local Hive Cannabis store for snacks-adjacent advice on flower, pre-rolls, or low-dose edibles to round out movie night.
