CBD is everywhere, but what actually is it, and how is it different from THC? Here's a clear-headed look at one of cannabis's most-talked-about compounds.
January is CBD Month, and it's a great time to dig into one of the most misunderstood compounds in cannabis. Whether you're CBD-curious or already a regular user, here's a friendly overview from the team at Hive Cannabis.
What Is CBD, Exactly?
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of more than 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, CBD is non-intoxicating — it won't make you feel "high." Many people describe its effects as subtle: a sense of calm, a slight relaxation, or simply not much noticeable at all (which is actually normal for many CBD users).
CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors involved in things like mood, appetite, and rest. Research is still evolving, and we're careful at Hive Cannabis to not overstate what CBD can or can't do. It is not a medical treatment, and we don't make health claims about it.
CBD vs. THC: The Quick Version
- THC is intoxicating. It produces the classic cannabis "high." - CBD is non-intoxicating. No high, no impairment in the same way. - Many products combine the two in different ratios (1:1, 2:1, 20:1, etc.).
The ratio matters. A 20:1 CBD:THC tincture will feel very different from a 1:1 gummy. If you're new to CBD, a high-CBD, low-THC ratio is often a comfortable place to start.
Common CBD Formats at Hive
You'll find CBD across a wide range of products at our BC stores:
- Oils and tinctures — measured with a dropper, easy to dose precisely - Softgel capsules — convenient and consistent - Edibles and gummies — often available as CBD-only or CBD:THC blends - Topicals — balms, lotions, and bath products applied to the skin - CBD-rich flower and pre-rolls — for those who prefer to smoke or vape
How People Use CBD
We hear a lot of reasons from our customers. Some use CBD as part of a wind-down routine in the evening, others as a midday option when they don't want any intoxication. Topicals are popular after workouts or long days on your feet. Again, individual experiences vary, and CBD is not a substitute for medical care.
Dosing CBD
CBD dosing is very individual. A common starting point is 5 to 10 mg, taken once or twice a day, and adjusted from there based on how you feel. Unlike THC, you don't need to worry about "greening out" on CBD, but more is not always better — many people find a moderate dose works just as well as a large one.
If you're combining CBD with THC, treat the THC dose as the more important number for assessing impairment. Never drive after consuming THC, even in small amounts.
Celebrating CBD Month
Throughout January, ask the team at any Hive Cannabis location — Abbotsford, Terrace, Quesnel, Port Alberni, or Fort St. John — about the CBD products on our shelves. We'll happily walk you through ratios, formats, and what might suit your goals. Cannabis is for adults 19 and over, and as always, start low and go slow.
