Joint, blunt, or spliff? They look similar but they're not the same. Here's a clear breakdown of each — and a few tips for choosing what's right for you.
Walk into any Hive Cannabis location and you'll see a wall of pre-rolls, papers, and accessories. But what's the actual difference between a joint, a blunt, and a spliff? Here's a quick, friendly breakdown.
The Joint
A joint is the classic: ground cannabis flower rolled in a thin rolling paper, usually rice, hemp, or wood pulp. Most joints have a crutch (also called a filter or tip) made of rolled cardstock for airflow and to keep your lips off the cherry.
- Contains: cannabis only - Paper: thin rolling paper - Size: usually 0.5 g to 1.5 g - Burn: clean, fairly fast
Joints are the go-to for most cannabis consumers in Canada. They burn cleanly, taste like the flower, and you can roll them as big or as small as you like.
The Blunt
A blunt is rolled in a tobacco-leaf wrap (or, in regulated Canadian retail, a hemp wrap that looks similar). They're typically thicker than joints and burn slower.
- Contains: cannabis (and in some traditions, tobacco leaf in the wrap) - Paper: tobacco or hemp leaf wrap - Size: often 1 g to 3 g - Burn: slow, heavy
A heads-up: traditional tobacco-leaf blunts contain nicotine, which is addictive and brings its own health risks. In the Canadian regulated market, you'll mostly find hemp-based blunt wraps that look similar without the tobacco.
The Spliff
A spliff is a joint that combines cannabis and tobacco mixed together inside a standard rolling paper. They're more common in Europe than in Canada.
- Contains: cannabis + tobacco - Paper: thin rolling paper - Size: varies - Burn: like a joint, but with a noticeable tobacco buzz
The tobacco changes the experience — many people describe it as more "head-rushy" and shorter-lasting. It also brings nicotine into the mix, which is worth being deliberate about.
Which One Should You Try?
If you're new:
- Start with a pre-roll joint from a regulated retailer. The flower is lab-tested, the size is predictable, and there's no rolling skill required. - Try sharing one with a friend so you don't overdo it.
If you're more experienced:
- A blunt with a hemp wrap can be a nice slow-burn for an outdoor afternoon. - A spliff is a personal preference call — if you don't use tobacco, skip it.
Rolling Your Own
Rolling takes practice. A few tips:
1. Grind evenly — chunks burn unevenly and create canoes. 2. Use a crutch. It dramatically improves the smoking experience. 3. Pack lightly. Over-packing makes joints hard to draw. 4. Tuck and roll with patience. Watch a couple of videos — it's faster to learn that way than from text.
Or just grab a pre-roll. We won't judge.
Smoking Safety
Smoking anything — cannabis included — has health considerations. Vaporizers, edibles, and tinctures are alternatives that don't involve combustion. Cannabis is for adults 19 and over in BC, and never drive after smoking.
