THC gets the headlines, but CBD and CBN are doing a lot of interesting work behind the scenes. Here's what they are, how they differ, and how people use them.
THC dominates most cannabis conversations — and for good reason — but two other cannabinoids have been gaining serious attention: CBD and CBN. At Hive Cannabis, we get more questions about these every month. Here's a clear-headed look at both.
CBD: The Non-Intoxicating Workhorse
CBD (cannabidiol) is the second most-studied cannabinoid after THC. It's non-intoxicating — you won't feel "high" from CBD on its own.
People reach for CBD for a wide range of reasons. Many of our customers describe a sense of calm or a subtle ease, while others say they barely notice anything at all (which is normal). CBD is not a medical treatment, and we're careful not to promise specific outcomes.
What we *can* tell you:
- CBD interacts with your endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in things like mood, appetite, and rest. - CBD is available in oils, softgels, edibles, topicals, beverages, and CBD-rich flower. - CBD is often paired with small amounts of THC for what some people call a "fuller" experience (the so-called *entourage effect*).
CBN: The "Sleepy" Cannabinoid
CBN (cannabinol) is a cannabinoid that forms naturally as THC ages and oxidizes. It's been getting a lot of attention recently in sleep-focused products.
People often describe CBN as having a heavier, more sedating feel than CBD, though research is still early and individual experiences vary. CBN is usually included in products at relatively small doses (often 2 to 10 mg), frequently combined with THC and/or CBD.
You'll most commonly see CBN in:
- Sleep-focused softgels (often a blend like 5 mg THC / 5 mg CBD / 5 mg CBN) - Nighttime gummies and chocolates - Tinctures designed for evening use
CBD vs. CBN at a Glance
| Cannabinoid | Intoxicating? | Common Use Case | Typical Dose | |---|---|---|---| | CBD | No | Calm, daytime use, recovery | 10 to 25 mg | | CBN | Mild at best | Evening, wind-down | 2 to 10 mg |
(These are general consumer-experience ranges, not medical recommendations.)
How People Combine Them
Many of the most popular sleep-format products on our shelves combine all three — THC, CBD, and CBN — at low doses. A blend like 2.5 mg THC + 5 mg CBD + 5 mg CBN in a single gummy is gentle, predictable, and works well for a lot of consumers. If you're new to cannabis altogether, start with a half-dose and see how you feel.
Formats to Know
- Tinctures and oils — drop under the tongue, fast and dose-precise - Softgels — easy daily use - Edibles — gummies, chocolates, chews - Topicals — mostly CBD; not really a CBN category yet - Flower — CBD-rich strains exist; CBN flower is rare (CBN is usually a processing byproduct)
A Few Reminders
- These cannabinoids are not medical treatments. If you're navigating a health condition, please speak to a healthcare provider. - Even non-intoxicating cannabinoids should be approached thoughtfully if you're combining them with medications. - Cannabis products are for adults 19 and over in BC. - Start low, go slow, and give a new product at least a week before deciding if it works for you.
Stop by Hive Cannabis in Abbotsford, Terrace, Quesnel, Port Alberni, or Fort St. John and our budtenders will happily walk you through the CBD and CBN options on our shelves.
