Fall in a mug — with a thoughtful little lift. This cannabis-infused pumpkin spice latte is a cozy, low-dose afternoon treat for adults 19 and over.
Pumpkin spice season is sacred in BC. Add a little cannabis-infused twist and you've got a perfect Sunday afternoon ritual. This recipe uses cannabis-infused oil or butter as the dose carrier and keeps things low and slow.
Important: Dosing First
For one latte, we'll target 5 mg of THC — a comfortable dose for most experienced consumers, and a bit strong for beginners. If you're new, halve the recipe's cannabis component or split the drink with a friend.
To get 5 mg per latte, you need an infused oil or butter where you know the milligrams per teaspoon. (See our cannabutter post for the full method.) For this recipe we'll assume 5 mg of THC per 1 teaspoon of your infused oil/butter.
Ingredients (Makes 1 Latte)
- 1 cup whole milk (or oat/almond milk) - 2 tbsp pure pumpkin purée (not pie filling) - 1 tbsp maple syrup or brown sugar, to taste - 1/2 tsp vanilla extract - 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice - 1 shot (about 1/4 cup) brewed espresso or strong coffee - 1 tsp cannabis-infused coconut oil or cannabutter (5 mg THC) - Optional: whipped cream and a pinch of cinnamon
Instructions
1. Warm the milk. In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, combine the milk, pumpkin purée, maple syrup, vanilla, and pumpkin pie spice. Whisk constantly until steaming but not boiling. 2. Brew the coffee. Pull a shot of espresso or brew a small, strong cup of coffee. 3. Combine. Pour the espresso into your mug. Add the infused oil or cannabutter and whisk to combine — the heat from the coffee helps it incorporate. 4. Add the milk. Pour the warm pumpkin spice milk on top. Whisk or use a frother for a little foam. 5. Garnish. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or extra pumpkin pie spice. 6. Sip slowly. This isn't a chug-it drink. Take 20 to 30 minutes to enjoy.
Onset and Effects
Because the THC is in fat (oil/butter) that you're drinking, you're essentially having a liquid edible. Expect onset in 30 to 90 minutes and effects to last several hours. Some people feel drinkable edibles come on a touch faster than solid food, but plan as if it's a regular edible.
Don't:
- Drink a second latte if you don't feel it yet at the 30-minute mark - Pair with alcohol - Drive afterward
Do:
- Have a snack alongside - Stay home or somewhere comfortable - Tell anyone you're sharing with exactly how much THC is in the drink
Make Ahead Tips
You can make a pumpkin spice syrup in advance — simmer 1 cup water, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup pumpkin purée, and 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice for 10 minutes, then strain. Use 2 tablespoons of syrup per latte and just add the infused oil to each individual cup.
